Born in Hammamatsu, Japan, Sumiko Seki has worked in London since graduating with her Masters degree from Chelsea College of Art in 2002.
Seki had already been showing her watercolour paintings regularly as an undergraduate at Byam Shaw School of Art, and in the process won two prestigious awards. Her work was selected for ‘Notably’ (2002), an exhibition at the Pump House Gallery, showing the pick of the London graduate exhibitions as selected by leading gallerists and critics. Seki also featured in ‘Post Otaku’ (2002), a key exhibition at Goedhuis Contemporary in London, showcasing four artists whose work has its origins in the culture of Japan.
Since graduating Seki has been represented by Mark Jason Gallery in London, and has featured in many of its group and solo exhibitions. In her 2008 solo exhibition ‘A Thousand Blooms’, Seki’s work began to draw more heavily on Japanese culture and symbolism featuring motifs drawn from Kimono designs. ‘The Fair and The Thorns’ (2007) a solo exhibition at Gone Tomorrow Gallery, London, delved deeper into this mystical culture, often depicting lone female figures in imaginary landscapes.
Seki’s work features in a number of private collections, both in the UK and internationally.
